In Closing (2008-2017)

This is a long time coming, but I figured it was time to finally put it down in writing. We will be putting Toxicbreed's Funhouse to rest after a nine year run. Due to time constraints and new life ventures, we just don't have the free time or energy to maintain an active blog at this point. I just want to take a moment and thank each and every one of you who checked out the site, supported our projects, and kept the social community around the site itself an active and fun place. Upon initially starting the blog in 2008 I had zero idea it would last as long as it has and would have gotten such a strong following over the years. Thank you to each and every one of you who helped us break the 7 million page view mark in our existence.

Thank you and goodbye,
Wayne & Eliot

Review: Axis-Shift

2017

In my humble opinion, Axis is not only the best currently active hardcore band in Florida, but one of the best current hardcore bands period. In 2015, after a string of excellent EP and split releases, the band unleashed their breakthrough debut LP "Show Your Greed", a blistering 10 song collection of crushing metallic hardcore that took the foundation laid out by powerhouse bands such as All Else Failed, Deadguy and Turmoil and upped the intensity tenfold. It's a release that I still spin regularly today and one of the finest metallic hardcore albums of the last decade, if not longer. After touring on that LP, the band followed it up with an unexpected curveball, a stunning collaboration EP with Seraph/The Light that drew more inspiration from the build up and release intensity of metal giants Cult Of Luna and Neurosis than the metallic hardcore foundation they pushed on previous releases. Nearly a year later, the band has released their highly anticipated sophomore LP "Shift" and once again they have pushed the boundaries with an album of crushing, forward thinking metallic hardcore.

One of the most noticeable differences out of the gate with "Shift" is the absence of previous vocalist Rafael Morales, with guitarist Dylan Downey taking on main vocal duties this time around in addition to his previous roll. Thankfully the band doesn't lose an ounce of their intensity from the lineup change, delivering their urgent and crushing material to date. They also add flashes of the intense buildup shown on their collaboration LP as well, blending in the more experimental elements of their sound perfectly with the heavy metallic hardcore that they've become well known for. It's a pairing that further elevates the band's standing as one of the more unique metallic hardcore bands that are currently active.

With "Shift", Axis again have released an album that is both unbelievably catchy and filled with dense/intricate songwriting that will continue to reward with repeat listens. You can stream the entire record via Good Fight Entertainment's bandcamp below, where you can also find links to purchase physical copies of the album. "Shift" is a highly recommended listen to all fans of heavy music/metallic hardcore.

Review/Stream: Shurwood-Somewhere I Have Not Traveled

2017

Somewhere I Have Not Traveled, the debut EP from Tampa, Florida alternative/emo quartet Shurwood quietly dropped today, and it exceeds the promise already shown on their excellent initial releases. The 6 songs on this release showcase the band's familiar and yet unique take on the hazy and atmospheric emotional punk that bands like Daylight, Title Fight and Turnover have brought to the forefront throughout the years, while a distinct heavy quality in both lyrical content and guitarwork manages to put the band in their own category altogether. This release is a must listen for any fans of the aforementioned bands. You can stream the release below, and check their bandcamp link above if you'd like to grab a digital copy on a pay what you want basis. Also below you can find the band's tour dates supporting the release, so make sure to catch them if they are hitting your area.

Review: Full Of Hell-Trumpeting Ecstasy

2017

I've been covering Maryland powerhouse Full Of Hell practically since I started writing for this blog, starting initially with their now revered debut LP for A389 Records "Roots Of Earth Are Consuming My Home". Since then the band has made large strides and progressed at a fever pitch pace, consistently upping the ante with every single subsequent release. After releasing collaborative LP's with the likes of The Body and Merzbow, a crushing 7 inch split with recent touring partners Nails, and a consistent touring regiment that has seen the band travel up and down the United States as well as several other areas of the world, the band has released their long awaited third full length LP Trumpeting Ecstasy, and the wait has been more than worth it. This record shows that the band's time on the road and in the studio with various peers has tremendously expanded their musicianship and the mastering of their craft, and stands as the most volatile and impressive statement of intent from the band to date.

Trumpeting Ecstasy is a relentless assault to the senses, from the opening notes of the first track until the very end of it's 25 minute duration. While previous releases from the band have seen them explore all the various corners of the extreme music world to varying degrees, this album takes the sonic identity of the band and pushes it to it's purest form, sharpening their blackened hardcore punk/grindcore sound into the most razor sharp, direct and hard hitting that it has ever sounded. An incredible recording from Kurt Ballou of God City Studios also pushes everything to the next level, bringing a previously unheard weight and heft to the band's sound that only serves to highlight their sonic strengths even further.

Dipping into all of their previous influences while commanding a sound that has become wholly and uniquely their own, the band has impressively managed to not only release their heaviest and most extreme album to date, but also strangely their most accessible. The result is not only an album that will blow away long time fans of the band with high expectations, but will undoubtfully turn the heads of many uninitiated listeners as well. With Trumpeting Ecstasy, Full Of Hell have further cemented their place in the top tier of active extreme musicians today, and have yet again upped the ante with their finest set of songs to date. Absolutely essential for extreme music fans of any and all walks of life.

SONG PREMIERE: Frustrated "Sinking Low"

We've teamed up with Southern California's Frustrated to bring you an exclusive premiere for the bands new single "Sinking Low". The track comes as the first single from the band's upcoming six song EP entitled "Lost Myself", which is slated to be self released this April/May.

"Lost Myself" comes as a new chapter for the Hardcore outfit, as it's a step in a new direction with the bands sound as a whole. Which as someone who has seen this band live since 2015 was a very good decision. Keep your eyes peeled for the forthcoming EP and for now, enjoy "Sinking Low".

Keep up to date with Frustrated happenings!

Regional Justice Center- Demo

Year: 2017
Quality: 320kbps
Tracklist:
1.Duplicity
2.Privilege
3.Fearful
4.Cannibalized
5.Iron

One man bands in the Punk/Hardcore realm are a very rare breed, so to see a band like this pop up and fully catch my attention is beyond exciting for me as a music listener. Regional Justice Center is a Powerviolence project started by Ian Shelton (Self Defense Family/Seattle's New Gods) in Seattle, WA. If you're into 89-91 Encinitas / LA Powerviolence ala No Comment and Crossed Out this will 100% be up your alley. One of my favorite demos to drop so far in 2017.

Review: Power Trip-Nightmare Logic

2017

It's hard to believe it's been 3 years since Texas metal/hardcore crossover ragers Power Trip released their excellent debut LP Manifest Decimation, but time can fly fast, and the band certainly made the most of it, touring up and down the US and various other parts in the world with bands as varied as Anthrax, Lamb Of God, Terror, and Mammoth Grinder to name a few. Spreading their insane and energetic live show to the masses has found the band honing their craft to perfection, resulting in their long awaited second LP Nightmare Logic. As the band tears through the 8 songs on this record, one thing is made very clear: Nightmare Logic takes everything that made Manifest Decimation and the band in general so appealing and doubles down the intensity, resulting in the band's best material to date.

For those who have yet to hear Power Trip (a very small amount of our reader base I'd imagine but possible none the less) the band effortlessly fuses thrash metal and hardcore into a furious sound that certainly earns the crossover tag due to it's extremely wide range of appeal. It's easy to see why metalheads and hardcore kids alike have packed in the bands shows across the country and beyond, as the band fuses these sounds together perfectly and channels them through 8 expertly crafted songs that remain blisteringly heavy, intense and energetic and incredibly catchy all times. The band is most definitely firing on all cylinders here, and much like the previous LP it's hard to pick just one or two standout songs when all 8 have so many stand out moments. The band rips through the album in just over a brisk 30 minutes,  leaving you with an uncontrollable urge to mosh, headbang and fist pump into oblivion the entire duration, and wanting to go back for many repeated listens afterwords.

With Nightmare Logic, Power Trip have once again proven that they are at the top of their game in the extreme metal/hardcore world, coming back with an album that has everything that made the first LP so great and even more to offer beyond that. It's a must listen for any fan of extreme music in general, and already an arguable early contender for one of the years best albums. You can find a link to purchase a physical copy of the record via Southern Lord below, and be sure to catch the band in a city near you as they undoubtfully hit the road for eternity.

Review:Withdrawal-Never

2016

One of the biggest surprises at the end of the year came in the form of the release of the long awaited full length LP from Winnipeg hardcore band Withdrawal. After several awesome EP's and split releases that highlighted the band's intense take on the crushing metallic hardcore sound that bands like All Out War, Integrity, and Ringworm brought to the forefront in the 90's. The wait was indeed worth it, as Never shows Withdrawal in top form and this stands as their best material to date.

Fans of the aforementioned bands and the metallic hardcore they crafted will certainly appreciate not only the vitriol and energy that Withdrawal bring to the table with these 10 songs,, but also their excellent use of atmosphere and dynamics. Their vicious brand of hardcore is spaced out with gloomy melodic passages and build ups that always keep things interesting and always transition perfectly back into heavier sections. A blistering listen from start to finish, Never is filled to the brim with memorable riffs and crushing sections that you'll want to come back to again and again.

Never is an excellent LP that both pays respect to the Cleveland metallic hardcore bands that influenced Withdrawal as well as pushing forward with a new high watermark for the band. It's definitely worth a listen immediately if you're into any of the aforementioned bands and heavy hardcore in general. Check below for a stream of the entire album via the Escapist Records bandcamp, as well as a link to purchase a physical copy of the record via their webstore.

Review/Stream:Nmbrs-001 Demo

2016

Nmbrs are a new punk/hardcore band from Tampa/St.Petersburg Florida. This trio harkens back to the days of the late 80's/early 90's punk hardcore stalwars such as Wire, Swizz, and Mission Of Burma. This demo has 5 angular and simple and anthemic songs on it, catchy riffs and dual shouted vocals. Given the band has members of Florida punk bands I'm An Intestine, Permanent Makeup and Fevers among others, it's no surprise that this is some quality stuff that any fans of the aforementioned bands or the golden era Dischord sound of the 80's and 90's should definitely take a listen to. Stream the record below and check out their bandcamp for information on getting a physical copy.
